Collaboration with Sandbox Hub
At one of their first conferences in Lisbon, aiconix won the 3rd prize for innovation. Shortly later, they were selected by the Forbes Magazine as one of the TOP 30 start-ups in AI for the DACH region. Success, of course, also means finding customers. aiconix found its first customers via the network of the NMA accelerator. “We were surprised about feedback from the market and from conferences. We have been really impressed that companies like German News Agency were interested in our solution. That gave us the feeling that we were going in the right direction”, says Eugen, Founder of aiconix.

The Next Media Accelerator was the start-up’s first investor and introduced them to different Sandbox Hub members, such as VRT, Storytek and ARD. The start-up met most of the media organisations at events like Slush, Websummit, SXSW, etc. Via these networking events, they were able to present at the Cannes film festival, the Slush Conference and SxSW in Texas.
At a conference, aiconix’ first approach is always to meet Sandbox members because they can introduce the start-up to other (media) organisations and more specifically to their innovation department. "You begin selling after the conference, when you’re at the bar talking to speakers or investors”, explains Eugen.
3 advantages of the Sandbox Hub
Eugen raises several reasons for working with a media organisation.
First, media organisations are always open-minded to test a product and have a good view on the possibilities for a start-up. According to Eugen, it’s the ideal way to test the product in the open space. The companies they met encouraged them to directly offer their solutions to the suppliers they are working with. Through this cooperation, they understood that they should change their selling structure and sell to resellers instead. “For example, if we are now trying to deal with VRT, we would go to those software providers that are already dealing with VRT”, explains Eugen.
Second, you learn to understand how big corporations work and think. Even if a product is good and needed, it is very important to understand the processes and workflows of media companies. They focus now on companies providing CMS or MAM systems and plug into those which are already established in the media company.
Third, it is an asset for a start-up to show they have an international network/client. “As soon as we can report that we have one international customer, then the attention from investors rises,'' says Eugen.
